The TransAmerica Bicycle Trail

 

2001 is the 25th Anniversary of the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, developed in 1976 to celebrate our country’s 200th birthday, or Bikecentennial. Since then, thousands of cyclists have ridden this 4,200 mile route between Virginia and Oregon along America’s back roads, using detailed maps developed by Adventure Cycling. The Trail is noted for its focus on America’s heartland, scenic diversity, and historical interest. 

 

We were glad we decided to ride east to west for these reasons:

We avoided the rain and cold weather common in the Western mountain states early in the season.

We followed the historical development of our country east to west

bullet

Many of the significant climbs were easier and more scenic in this direction.

We had the sun at our back in the mornings when we did most of our riding, instead of in our eyes.

bullet

We rode toward home, saving our favorite region, the West, for last.
